She started her horse show career in 1939 debuting at the Calgary Stampede Horse Show. From there she went on to win numerous other titles including the 1949 Saskatoon Jumper Championship. From the years of 1955 to 1977 Joyce Viccars showed all over North America some her travels included Seattle, Vancouver, Portland, Regina, Brandon, Del Mar, Edmonton, Las Vegas, Minnesota, Chicago, Green Bay and Toronto. One of her career highlights came in 1957 when she was invited to compete on the Canadian Equestrian Team, however this would mean that she would have to move to Toronto, she regrettably had to decline. In 1972 Joyce opened her own training stable and took great joy in mentoring many young riders. All of her students enjoyed manysuccess in the riding arena. Among the students she trained was Sue Hebenton, still active in both the show jumping and racing industry.
Joyce has made a mark on the equine community in Alberta. She is one of the longest standing volunteers at Spruce Meadows, volunteering at every Masters Tournament from 1972 up until 2006. She is personal friends with many of the ‘greats’ of the industry and we are pleased to celebrate her 80th birthday with her.
