2009 Mid Summer Classic Completed:

The 2009 edition of the Mid Summer Classic completed just a week ago. As most of our readers know, this year it was a tournament dedicated to the celebration of the St. Georges Stables 50th anniversary. It was truly a special week, and what a fantastic job the Selinger's did in preparing their Grand Prix field for Derby Day!

For those of you who had the chance to join us for the celebration, RMSJ along with the Selinger family would like to thank you for all of your incredible support of the event. The Mid Summer Classic along with the St. Georges celebration raised funds to benefit the Joseph Selinger Foundation in memory of Frank and Selena's son who was tragically taken from us as a two year old, six years ago. Portions of the start fees on Thursday, as well as an auction at the dinner/dance helped us reach our goal of $20,000 to this fine charity that maintains a flower garden and walk at the Alberta Children's Hospital.

A special thanks also to Rosie and Monica Commons with their coach Des Lowe who joined us all thge way from New Zealand to compete at the Mid Summer Classic on loaned horses found by Bobbie Reber. We hope you enjoyed you time in Alberta and hope you come back again!

$10,000 Milner Downs Hunter Derby:

Don't be surprised to see RMSJ go Hunter Derby crazy in coming years! This past weekend, John Anderson had the chance to visit Milner Downs in Langley, BC on an invitation from resident trainer and renowned judge, Bobbie Reber to compete in the $10,000 Hunter Derby..

In the past few years around North America, there has been a shift in the Hunter ring for course designers to change up the outside diagonal, outside cookie cut courses. This has sparked a new breed of competition in a retro kind of way.....the Hunter Derby, where riders are required to polish their skills and ride better to achieve their desired result.

Riders who compete in a Hunter Derby are required to ride a much longer course than a normal hunter round, and as in the Jumper Derbies, jump numerous natural obstacles. Of course standard hunter rules still apply....find the gap, keep adjustments very subtle, and of course stay smooth. Typically, the top 12 horses are asked to return for a second round where all of the rules stay the same with the addition of being asked to do the shortened course in handy style.

It was a great competition with the birm in the Ashley Reber Grand Hunter Ring packed with spectators for the event in anticipation of crowning the ultimate champion who this year was Laura Jane Tidball and her grey horse Enzo.

Many Grand Prix riders have been asked what it is like to ride in a competition like this, and the most common answer is "a heck of a lot of fun!"

Alberta Select Riders:

As part of the growth plans for the Alberta Select Riders program, a new website will be launched shortly you will be able to see the website here and we will inform you when the site is up and running.

One of the goals in the program for future years will be raising funds to assist in sending some of our talented Alberta riders to other venues around the world to gain valuable competition experience. As an initial reconnaissance mission if you will, ASR representatives Brenda Riddell and John Anderson are organizing a trip to Mexico, hopefully with a group of about 15 - 20 fellow Albertans. We are looking to compete in four to five competitions over a six week period in October/November.

More information will be available shortly, and there are already quite a few people that have expressed interest in joining the group. Should you have any interest, please send us an email indicating your interest. All of the tournaments have events from 1.0m all the way to Grand Prix's for the open horses.

Helping to create excellence in the sport!
