The St. George's 50th Anniversary Celebration:

The management of RMSJ is pleased at this time to announce the 50th Anniversary Celebration of St. Georges Stables that will take place at the 2009 Mid Summer Classic II being held July 8 – 12 at Anderson Ranch.

Many of you might not know just how instrumental to the sport of Show Jumping not only here in Alberta, but across Canada that the Selinger family has been.  It can be said, that if it wasn’t for Joe Selinger, there would probably not be the Spruce Meadows venue in our sport today.  Had the Southern family not been introduced to the sport by Joe so many years ago, the family would not have travelled to Europe in search of horses, nor embarked on the building of their family’s stable, Spruce Meadows.

If you take a look at many of the families that participated in our sport, you will most likely see a

tie to instruction from Joe Selinger in their beginnings. The Southern family, French family, Anderson family, Krausert family, Herrington family, Riddell family, and Hamilton family all began their riding careers with Joe Selinger.

Joe's son Frank has carried on the committment to our sport, and has been responsible for the development of so many riders in our province over the past 30 years that he has been training riders of all levels.

When Frank's wife Selena approached us at RMSJ a few months ago, we were very excited to let them know how pleased we would be to help them celebrate such a significant milestone. At the upcoming Mid Summer Classic, get ready for some action packed fun at the tournament with over $100,000 in prize money.

Following competition on the opening day, RMSJ will host a exhibitors welcome reception at the neighboring Sirocco Golf Course out on the deck. On Thursday, there will be no competitions in the two jumper rings. Instead, we will host the $25,000 "Derby Day" on the Grand Prix field at St. Georges Stables next door. On Friday evening, following competition, there will be a huge dinner and dance with a live band and fireworks show to celebrate, 'In Style" the 50th Anniversary of St. Georges Stables. And of course back by popular demand will be the different heights Team Cups and Grand Prix's on Saturday and Sunday, with total purses of $50,000 for the four events.

The Mid Summer Classic will also be using this tournament as a fundraiser to benefit the Joseph Selinger Foundation in memory of Frank and Selena's son who was tragically taken from us as a two year old, six years ago. Portions of the start fees on Thursday, as well as an auction at the dinner/dance should help us reach our goal of $20,000 to this fine charity that maintains a flower garden and walk at the Alberta Children's Hospital.

The prize lists for both Mid Summer Classics will be posted by the end of this week with entries to close on June 26th. Information will be found if you click here

Selena Selinger has opted out of competing with Optiemist on the 1.20m team as she has been on the team a few times before and thought it would be great to give another rider the chance to compete. Thanks for your consideration Selena! There will be an official coin toss with the next competitors in line to break the tie, as the scores were identical.

All of the riders who made the teams will be contacted shortly and informed of the location of the team building dinner where all of the coolers, shirts, hats and of course checks will be distributed. Good Luck Alberta Select Riders!

As many of you know, the Alberta Select Riders program was introduced to the province seven years ago by Brenda Riddell. She arranged sponsorship from Paramount Energy Trust & Anderson Ranch who collectively have contributed over $140,000 to the program over the years. In the years to come, the Alberta Select Riders program will continue, however, there may be some changes in the overall format. If and/or when these changes happen, we will be sure to inform all of the Jr/Am riders for whom the program was introduced, and who have givven the program such great support over the years.
