Horseshoes, Horseshoes at RMSJ

2009 Rewards Program Launch at the Winter Training Series...by: Lindsey  Ross

The talk was “Horseshoes, Horseshoes and more Horseshoes” at the second hunters only edition of the Winter Training Series that ended on March 1st

On December 1st of last year, Rocky Mountain Show Jumping launched the Horseshoe Rewards program, a program designed to reward exhibitors for their participation at any of the show jumping tournaments held at RMSJ.  After four of the Winter Training Series events held thus far this year, the program is generating nothing but praise from exhibitors.  “We are actually being given money back to us for attending events here, and it’s a great way to be thanked for our participation” said Debbie Komitsch, whose daughter Katrina is a regular exhibitor of the Winter Training Series.

I had a chance to sit down with John and ask him about the rewards program and why he decided it would be a good fit to RMSJ.  “I love to host show jumping events, because of my passion for the sport, and its development.  The rewards program came about because of the deteriorating state of global economies that became even more pronounced last fall.  As a tournament organizer, I felt it necessary to reward exhibitors for their participation in our events.  So many venues around North America simply host events with the sense that the exhibitor is their revenue generator.  Now while that is true, we felt like taking it to the next level by actually rewarding our exhibitors for their attendance.  Essentially, we are rewarding them with cash back, and with our rewards program, that cash comes in the form of horseshoes.”

Diving into the system, I was able to see how it works.  An exhibitor attends an event and spends money on stabling and entry fees.  If the exhibitor has signed up for the program, he/she receives ½ of a horseshoe for each dollar spent at an RMSJ event.  It is very similar to an Air miles program.  After an exhibitor accumulates enough horseshoes, they can be redeemed for a wide list of items related to their expenses at events.  Items like free stalls, class or division entry fees, various retailer discount coupons, and even a range of clothing items related to RMSJ.  A few days after a tournament, exhibitors may check their horseshoes balance on the RMSJ website.

John told me, “It sure is great to see the exhibitors who support our events like this program.  Our sport is an expensive one, and especially in these difficult financial times, it is nice to see their dollars go a bit farther.  So far, in the programs infancy, we have had over 400 signups, and since December 1st, we have put $56,000.00 worth of horseshoes into our exhibitors’ pockets.”

It says right on the front of the rewards card “Remember, if you’re not the lead horse, the view never changes!”  This motto sure suits the team at RMSJ.  Their innovative ideas sure stand out.  I was so interested in the rewards program that weekend that I forgot that there was a tournament taking place.  Things seemed to be pretty much the same as the other events I have been to.  Lots of happy exhibitors!

I’m sure that everyone will enjoy their rewards and all of the 2009 events that are on the plate at Rocky Mountain Show Jumping.
